

Brasil qualified for the Fifa Women’s Under 20 World Cup to be played in Costa Rica commencing August 10, after the results of the second Matchday of the Cuadrangular round. The results also sealed the title for Brasil with a match to spare.
Brasil defeated Uruguay in the first game of the day courtesy of Cris’s left foot strike in the 29th minute, taking them to six points in the group. It was a hard fought contest Uruguay had entered the game without the tournament leading scorer Belen Aquino who suffered a sprained ankle and forced to watch from the sidelines. Uruguay did however come very close to the equaliser when Wendy Carballo pounced on a error by Brasil goalkeeper whose misplaced pass was intercepted, however Carballo’s chip shot from 30 yards struck the top of the crossbar and out of play. Clear opportunities where scarce and Brasil held out for the single goal success.


Colombia got their bid to qualify for the finals in Costa Rica back on track as they defeated Venezuela 3-0 in the second game of the evening. Maria Reyes bursting run to the bye line set up Gisela Robledo to fire home in the 36th minute. Venezuela battled for the equaliser however stout defending by Colombia kept them at bay in the 61st minute a goal mouth scramble was cleared. Slick passing almost lead to a second goal for Colombia in the 73rd minute however great awareness and double save by Venezuela keeper Hilary Azuaje denied Ingrid Guerra. However Guerra was not to be denied five minutes later a screaming left foot shot from the left side of the box flew by the keeper into the top corner of the net to double Colombia’s advantage. Gisela Robledo struck a fantastic solo goal in stoppage time to seal the 3-0 victory. Colombia will face Uruguay on April 24th requiring a draw having better goal difference than Uruguay. The defeat eliminates Venezuela.
